Umpiring
Q. How do I become an umpire
A.
The British Pétanque Umpires
Board (BPUB) runs courses for candidates and existing umpires.
Each course is run with the co-operation of the host Nation, in this
case the English Petanque Association.
The BPUB recommend that in the first place you contact your regional
umpire who will help you to prepare for the course and examination.
As soon as you both feel that you are ready your
regional umpire
should enrol you on a course.
Each course will be held over two days, day one will be about
training and consists of a presentation on the rules, open
discussions and practical sessions. On the second day there will be
a short review of the previous day followed by a written and
practical examination.
Existing and potential umpires need to understand that as umpires
they are required to support the BPUB and their home association in
umpiring club, regional, national and international events.
Each qualified umpire is expected to officiate at least one event in
a year. These events require the umpires to be on their feet
all day with very few breaks. This is not a commitment to be taken
lightly, hence the courses are demanding and require each delegate
to commit mentally and physically for the duration of the course.
Full details about the course is sent to your regional umpire and
secretary as soon as dates and venues have been confirmed.
